“Oh boy! Christmas is almost here!”
“And this is our last class before winter break!”
“Is it just me, or does Christmas come FASTER as time goes by?”
“It DOES come faster… To US. They say our perception of time speeds up with age.”
“Can we slow our perception back DOWN?”
“Well, I guess it's possible if you really tried, but then why would you WANT to? Then Christmas would take FOREVER to arrive again!”
“Ooh, good point.”
“Hey, speaking of taking forever to arrive, where's Professor McPatrick?”

Teacher: Here I am! Thank you for your patience, class. It took a great while to find a suitable Christmas poem, but I finally found it!

Student: Where'd you find it, Professor?
Teacher: From Alice in Wonderland!
Student: WHAT??
Teacher: You heard me! Lewis Carroll wrote this poem and other poems in addition to his classic timeless stories of Alice in Wonderland! It's called "Christmas Greeting from a Fairy to a Child", and the child in question is none other than Alice herself!
Student: Oh! So this poem is told in the viewpoint of a Fairy who is wishing Alice a Merry Christmas?
Teacher: Exactly! ...And this is how it goes.

Christmas Greeting From a Fairy to a Child -by Lewis Carroll, 1887
Lady dear, if fairies may
for a moment lay aside
Cunning tricks and childish play,
'tis at happy Christmas-tide.
We have heard the children say,
Gentle children, whom we love,
Long ago on Christmas Day,
Came a message from above.
Still as Christmas-tide comes round,
They remember it again.
Echo still the joyful sounds
"Peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Yet the hearts must childlike be
Where such heavenly guests abide;
Unto children, in their glee,
All the year is Christmas-tide!
Thus, forgetting tricks and play
For a moment, Lady dear,
We would wish you, if we may,
Merry Christmas, glad New Year!

"Wow! That poem was great!"
"You don't hear poems like THAT every day!"
