Did you know that Summer Vacation in Japan is only 3 weeks long?
Me: Whoa! That's rough. Just like summer school! You only get a 3-week break in between the spring and summer classes at best!
Francis: Some people think it's better for us kids to go to school year-round than to have a 2-3 month summer break, because they fear the "Summer Slide".
Me: What injustice! What torture! ...And what's the summer slide?
Francis: The "Summer Slide" is the theory of Summer Learning Loss. They fear that we may lose our intelligence, and that our brains will grow weak without being exercised a few months like a muscle, but that theory is hard to prove.
Me: I sure hope the grown-ups who say THAT aren't brain-dead THEMSELVES! ...EVERYONE needs a break! If your mind and muscles are all maxed-out, you won't get anywhere, pushing yourself any harder over the summer!
Francis: That's right! ...And summer isn't just for kids to take a break. It's also for teachers to train for next year's class! Most importantly, Summer vacation is for EVERYONE of all ages to escape the hottest months of the year!
Me: No, way! Really? Is THAT where summer vacation came from? To get away from the heat? ...Wow! I always WONDERED why summer goes from June-September in some places, and May-August in OTHER places!
